Hodgson's Mill Spring is located on Missouri Route 181 at Bryant Creek
in south-central Missouri. The spring rises from a joint in dolomite and
sandstone and is ranked 15th in Missouri with an average daily flow of
23.5 million gpd. Hodgson's Mill was constructed in 1897 to grind flour
from wheat and corn and is privately owned by Hank Macler and his wife,
Jean. The Macler's have done a very nice job restoring the site for
public enjoyment. In July 2002, Hank Macler requested the assistance of
the OCDA to attempt exploration efforts within the spring conduit. The
objective was to explore the underwater system and collect information
to help guide future development of the area from a preservation
standpoint.

On July 19, 2002, members of the OCDA arrived at the site. Conditions
for diving were difficult as flow was extremely high and the conduit
size very small. Divers were finally able to access the lower spring
(beneath the mill) utilizing a modified sidemount gear configuration.
However, once beyond the initial restriction, we found passage too small
to navigate any further (a vertical slot in dolomite measuring
approximately 6 inches in width). Diver's attempted a second access
point from within a small dry cave above the mill. This access point
also proved non-navigable and seemed to be more of a small seepage room.

During the project, members of the OCDA were able to take underwater
video for the Macler's depicting areas accessed by divers.
After a full day of work, diving operations were halted and project
diving at this site has been suspended.
Despite not being able to access much
of the underwater system, the team very much enjoyed the support and
company of Hank and Jean Macler. The area is a beautiful site worth
visiting for everyone.
