The Ozark Cave Diving Alliance

Hell Creek 2007

Upstream Section

After the initial effort through the natural entrance and the Dipping Vat sump area we headed back uphill to the shaft area where the Madison County Search and Rescue team had rigged the shaft for lowering gear and divers to the next staging area. The dive team planned to head upstream thru several sumps to conduct the survey and return with samples for the science team. The efforts of the MCSAR team are truly appreciated in all the work they did during the weekend.

The MCSAR team was waiting for the 2nd dive team the same afternoon.

They had rigged an English Reeves system of the shaft leading down to the sump area.

Shannon and Michael ready for the upstream biodiversity survey.

Shannon gets himself centered over the shaft before descending 170'.

Looking upsteam into sump 1. Here is where we met the science team walking upsteam from the natural entrance.

Brian Wagner, Shannon Wallace, and David Kampwerth waiting for Michael Budde to descend down the shaft.

Michael drops in.

Brian, Michael, Shannon, and David. It can get crowded down here pretty quick.

Brian Moore joins the fun. The lower shaft walls were producing quite the spring shower.

Michael and Shannon getting geared up for the dive.

Looking downstream from the shaft area. Nice walking stream passage.

Standing around waiting for the dive team to return...

One had to work to stay dry though...

The dive team returns after about 1.5 hours.

One of the crayfish being examined by Brian Wagner.

The samples were sent up to the surface for measurements and dna samples before being returned to where they were captured.

Brian checks out another crayfish. Be interesting to see if these are the same as Nesbitts' species.

Brian got a neat shot looking up the shaft.

Finishing off extracting divers and gear Saturday evening.

The next day Bob and Brian got back to sump 3 but found bad visibility. We managed to get some pictures in the 2nd Lake Room.

Note the neat formation towards the upper right.

This is pretty unique looking at horizontally growing formations.

Looking downstream from the 3rd sump area. Brian is at the bottom of the picture.

There's quite a bit of this on the ceiling.

Soda straws abound.

This is a real pretty area.

Mike and Shawn worked support both days. Good work, guys, it's appreciated!

The Madison County Search and Rescue team. A big Thank You from the OCDA for all your assistance!
